Merengue, a lively and energetic dance style that originated in the Dominican Republic, is one of the many Latin dance styles taught at Salsamology Dance Academy. Known for its fast-paced, upbeat rhythms, Merengue is a popular dance style enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
Merengue is a dance style that is deeply rooted in the Dominican Republic’s culture and history. It is believed to have originated in the 19th century and has since become a national symbol of the Dominican Republic. The dance is characterized by its two-step rhythm, which is easy to learn and makes Merengue a fun and accessible dance for beginners.
Merengue is typically danced in pairs, with partners holding each other in a closed position. The leader holds the follower’s waist with the right hand, while holding the follower’s right hand with the left at about the follower’s eye level. The dance involves a simple marching rhythm, with a strong hip sway over the leg that is stepping, and a bending and straightening of the knee to achieve the characteristic hip motion.
