Pachanaga

Latin dance styles

Pachanga is a joyful and energetic dance that has left a significant impact on the world of dance. Its playful movements naturally work together with salsa, making it a dance step worth including in every salsa dancer's repertoire.

Pachanga emerged as a combination of Plena and Merengue, with its rhythm developing as an offshoot from the original charanga music played in Cuba and around the Caribbean since the end of the 18th century. It was first danced at the Caravana Club in South Bronx in 1959, after a performance by Jose Fajardo in NYC in 1958. The dance and its accompanying music took only a few months to spread its popularity and became the number one dance sensation in the early 1960s.

Originating in Cuba in the 1950s, Pachanga is a lively and festive dance that has played a significant role in the evolution of Caribbean style music. It is described as a happy-go-lucky dance with a Charleston flavor, characterized by the bending and straightening of the knees, and an emphasis on weight and energy going into the ground.

Pachanga is a very grounded dance, with the knees never completely straightening. The body movement resulting from weight changes follows the footwork, with a bounce originating in the knees. The dance utilizes a swiveling motion, usually achieved by dancers placing their weight on the balls of their feet and twisting their hips. It often employs varied footwork patterns, from three to eight beats, but in general, each beat of the music is used.

Pachanga is not a difficult dance to learn. A basic pachanga step consists of a bending and straightening of the knees. Popular instructors include the “Mambo King” Eddie Torres, one of his students Eddie Torres Jr., and his former partner Shani Talmor.
